Write Your Story
Grandparent + Grandchildren Connection
Write Your Story – L’dor Vador
My paternal grandparents, Minnie and Jack, passed away 6 months apart when I was just 13 years old. There are so many things I wish I knew about them and so many questions I wish they could answer. Now that I’m a grandparent I want to make sure my grandchildren know as much as possible about my life.
That notion inspired the new Touro Synagogue’s Write Your Story – L’dor V’dor program designed for synagogue members who are grandparents and those that are like grandparents to younger people. Your stories are a gift for your grandchildren and they are magical for you. Happy, sad, full of emotion, your stories are the moments that have filled your life.
Here is how it works: Every other Monday you will take 10-15 minutes to journal your memory, inspired by a writing prompt that will be emailed to you. Writing prompts may include:
– On my mother’s dresser…
– My first crush…
– From my grandma’s kitchen…
– The craziest thing I did in high school…
Open the prompt, give yourself a little time and GO! The recommended story should be between 250-400 words, however, feel free to write as little or as much to tell your story. Include photos and other memorabilia if you chose to help bring your story to life.
Compile your stories in a journal, special notebook or on your computer. At the end of the year, we will develop a creative way to share your stories with your grandchildren. Once a month you will be invited to get together with everyone participating. Sign up below!
